The Lithuanian Maritime Museum, Aquarium, Dolphinarium

This museum is located in Smiltyne (Klaipeda) and it is not far from the sea. It was opened in 19th century and restored again in 1979. This Maritime Museum is divided to the Sea Museum, Aquarium, the Museum of the Curonian Spit Nature and the Dolphinarium. This museum was established in the fortress of the 18th century. Here you can find a lot of interesting collections of sea fauna and insects. Also there are archaeological, ethnographic items, coins, ships and their equipment as well. The exhibition illustrates the history of Lithuanian navigation. It is interesting that you can make an acquaintance with the sea mammals and sea-birds in the pools. A lot of penguins live in the pools of this museum. Here you can observe fish which was caught in the lakes and rivers of Lithuania. The Baltic and even Caribbean sea as well. Also there is a huge collection of mollusc which contains about 16000 different items.
Children like the Dolphinarium the most. It was opened in 1994 and it is the only museum which is situated on the coast of the Baltic Sea. Today it is rebuilt and the new building is located on the coast of the Curonian lagoon. Three time a day the Black sea dolphins make a show for the visitors of the Maritime Museum. And that is to mention that all those dolphins live there.
