Palanga Amber Museum

is known for its Amber Museum, which is located in the centre of Botanical Park – the most peaceful part of the town. The museum was opened in 1963 in the palace count Feliksas Tiskevicius. He reconstructed and ordered to design the Park. Amber is thought to be Lithuania’s gold. It is the fossilised resin of pine forests, which flourished here about 50 million years ago. During the Ice Age the resin was buried and hardened into amber. The museum keep exhibitions and collections of the pieces of that amber. It reflects the history of the formation of Lithuania’s gold. The visitors of the museum can see over 25,000 pieces of amber About 15,000 of those pieces have Jurassic insects trapped inside. They tell the story of "Baltic Gold". Also here you can buy amber jewellery, which were very valued by the civilisations of the eastern Mediterranean from remote prehistoric times. There are samples of fossil resins found in the different parts of the world.
